Another day, another privacy breach. This time, it was credit card data stolen from Polo/Ralph Lauren (remember! Carson on Queer Eye taught us all that it's pronounced 'LOR-en'...) belonging to HSBC customers holding a GM affinity card. As many as 187,000 people may be affected. What could possibly be causing this epidemic of data-spills? Is there something in the air or the water that has caused so many breaches in such a short period of time? Of course not. What we're seeing is something that's been happening every day all around us, but only now are we hearing about these things, in part because of laws that require consumers to be told when their private information has been compromised. When will we hear about all of the identity thefts that occurred less recently? Probably never. But at least now that we're hearing about the new breaches, perhaps the custodians of our private information will be sufficiently frightened into a less clueless frame of mind.
