It was my great honor and privilege to be my brother’s Best Man at his wedding last Saturday. It was a lovely ceremony, Scott’s bride Margaret was radiant, and everything came off without a hitch. Even the quirky Florida weather stayed nice until after the wedding (the typical Florida afternoon thunderstorm held off until just as we were about to leave the church).

The official pictures will be coming along soon, but I collected a few pictures from several attendees. I would have taken some pictures myself, but I was otherwise occupied. :-)

Eight US Attorneys were fired by the Bush Administration because they weren’t towing the partisan line. When will the media start asking about the 85 who weren’t fired? What have they been doing?

I keep waiting for somebody to point out the larger issue arising from the tragic pet food poisoning story. One supplier with a tainted product has manged to kill several hundred pets, sicken thousands, and cripple a huge chunk of the pet food market.

All indicators are that this was an accident. Just think if somebody did it on purpose and did it in a more nefarious way… and did it to some additive in the human food supply. What kind of disaster could be wrought?

Our food supply is the terrorism risk that nobody ever wants to talk about because it’s so scary. We rely on so few processors and vendors for certain things, such as processed corn syrup (a food stuff nearly unknown before the 1950s), that one bad actor with a devious plan could make us afraid to eat or drink nearly anything.

I am deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of so many dogs and cats. But their deaths won’t have been meaningless if we use this opportunity to focus on the risks to our food supply.

While driving home just now, I heard Rachel Maddow say that Molly Ivins passed away. I’d heard recently that her breast cancer had come back after several years in apparent remission.

If I had a nickel for every time I’ve encouraged someone to read Molly Ivins Can’t Say That, Can She?, I’d be a rich man. Then again, we’re all the richer for having had her brighten our lives with her poignant, hilarious, and prescient commentary.

Regular readers of this blog will note that I’ve quoted her a few times. Her insights into Texas politics are essential reading for anybody serious about understanding electoral politics in America. Forget deToqueville, Ivins is your Rosetta Stone to understanding America’s chronic political ills. ;)

Do yourself a favor, go buy these (among her other books…):

Rest in peace, Molly…
